Road/Racing BikesWe build road and race bikes to meet every need, from a starter bike up to a time-trial special with full Dura-Ace and carbon disc wheels. Martin believes in the importance of personal service and much prefers to meet customers and discuss their requirements face-to-face. That is why we don't, unlike other bike shops, have lists of pre-specified road bikes and prices and why we don't like to sell mail order, without a proper consultation. Of course, if you are an experienced rider and already know exactly the groupset, wheels and so on that you want, then we can build it for you. However, we usually find that customers appreciate our experience and advice - and may even end up spending less than they intended!

"Take my example - before I started designing this web-site I was a customer of Martin's. I had for years ridden a mountain bike on the road to get around but hadn't even sat on a road bike. Inspired by watching the Tour de France on TV and the Commonwealth Games in Rivington I decided I wanted to plunge into racing. I looked at the adverts in the cycling magazines and was ready to spend a lot of money on a race bike. Fortunately, I joined the Ribble Valley Cycling Club and someone there recommended I spoke to Martin. Martin pointed out that if I bought the type of bike I had been intending and used it for training it would get ruined in the British winter - I wouldn't even be able to fit mudguards to it! Instead, he talked through my needs and advised a far more sensible course of action.
First, he built me a winter/training bike, based on a budget steel frame. As I was used to mountain-bike gearing he put on a mountain-bike cassette with a 28-tooth lowest sprocket to break me in gently. We agreed that as I'd never ridden a road bike it was best to spend a little extra money on indexed levers, rather than shifters on the tube. Even so, Martin managed to save me some money by getting Mirage 9-speed levers to work perfectly with that cassette. Money was spent where it mattered - like on Tiagra brakes - and not on a fancy paint-job. This bike gave me chance to train in the Winter and make sure I was serious about cycling - and it was good enough that I won the Novice Trophy in the club Hill Climb a few days after getting it!
Martin then built up my race bike. As this was the middle of Winter and I now had a training bike I was no longer in a rush. Martin was able to 'cherry-pick' components (like the full Ultegra groupset) when suppliers discounted them at the end of season. I ended up with two bikes, far better suited to my needs, for less money than I was intending to spend on one. Throughout I've been extremely impressed with Martin's commitment to providing a quality product, pride in his work and understanding of cyclists' needs. We can build you a specialist cycle for time trialing or track use. We have access to most of the major component manufacturers and we can match a cycle to your specifications within your budget. The cycle on the left has Dura-ace gearset with a Campag Chainset, Navigator Carbon wheels, Cinelli Angel Bars, with an Alloy double butted frame.
